About this Station
Athens is located in northeast Georgia, in the Piedmont Plateau section of the state. The terrain is rolling to hilly with the elevation within the city averaging about 700 feet above sea level, and that of the county ranging mostly between 600 and 850 feet. The Atlantic Ocean 200 miles to the southeast, the Gulf of Mexico 275 miles to the south, and the southern Appalachian Mountains to the north and northwest, all exert some influence on the climate of Athens, with the total effect being a moderation of both summer and winter weather.
Summers are warm and somewhat humid in Athens, but there is a noticeable absence of prolonged periods of extreme heat. The maximum temperature reaches 90 degrees or higher on about one-half the days during the three months, June through August, but a temperature of l00 degrees or higher occurs during fewer than one-half the years.
With the mountains to the north serving as a partial barrier to the flow of extremely cold air into the area, winters in Athens are not severe. Cold spells are usually short-lived, interspersed with periods of warm southerly air flow, making normal outside activities possible throughout most years.
Average annual precipitation in Athens is fairly evenly distributed throughout the year, with slight maxima in winter, early spring, and in midsummer. In spite of what appears to be an abundant supply of moisture, dry spells of more or less serious consequence occur during most years. Fortunately, they are more frequent in autumn when long periods of clear, mild, weather not only are pleasant, but offer ideal conditions for harvesting operations.
Snowfall is not of much importance in the area. Measurable amounts occur rather infrequently, but occasionally there is sufficient fall to cause some accumulation on the ground.
The average length of the freeze-free growing season in Athens is 220 days, from early April, the average occurrence of the last spring freeze, to early November, the average occurrence of the first fall freeze.
Thunderstorms occur in all months of the year but are most frequent in June and July. Severe thunderstorms are infrequent, but may occur as isolated summer storms, or in squall lines of winter and spring. A few tornadoes have crossed the city and county since l930, causing several deaths.
